PWB (Pilot Weather Brief) — METARs & TAFs · Effective and last updated 26 July 2026

← Back to support
In short

No account, no ads, and no analytics or tracking SDKs. PWB does not sell personal data or share it with data brokers. Location access is optional. The app contacts public weather and Apple mapping services to provide its features, while the support website uses Cloudflare and Formspree. The details are below.

Who we are and what this policy covers

PWB is operated by Andrew Logie in the United Kingdom. In this policy, “PWB”, “we” and “us” refer to that operation. This policy covers both the PWB iPhone and iPad app and this support website.

The app has no user accounts or sign-in. We do not operate an app backend and do not receive a database of your favourites, routes, searches, location or weather activity.

Information kept on your device

PWB stores the information needed to remember how you use the app, including settings, favourites and groups, saved routes, recent ICAO searches, accepted safety notices, cached airport/weather data and airport time-zone results. This information remains in the app’s local storage and is not uploaded to us.

Your latest location is held in memory while the app is running and is not written to PWB’s persistent store. Removing the app removes its local data. Weather caches may also be cleared automatically by iOS.

Location

If you grant When In Use location access, PWB uses your location while the app is open to list and sort nearby airports, calculate distance, and centre and display your position on the map. Nearby-airport filtering, including the Nearby list in Add Airport, is performed on your device. You can use the app without location access by searching for airports by ICAO code.

PWB does not send your raw Core Location coordinate to us or to the NOAA weather API. Two mapping-related cases are worth explaining:

Who receives a request, and what they see

To provide live data, your device contacts the services below directly. Like any internet service, each service receives your network IP address and ordinary request metadata. PWB does not receive or control their server logs.

aviationweather.gov

NOAA / National Weather Service

Used for
METARs, TAFs, SIGMETs, airport and runway details
Receives
Your IP address, the airport, station or dataset requested, and a fixed User-Agent containing the PWB app version and support-site address
Does not receive
A PWB user, device or installation identifier

api.weather.gov

National Weather Service

Used for
US weather alerts shown on the map
Receives
Your IP address and a request for the current active US alerts feed; PWB does not send the viewed map area with this request

opengeo.ncep.noaa.gov

NOAA

Used for
US weather-radar imagery
Receives
Your IP address, radar capabilities requests, and—only while radar is enabled—the tile areas and radar time requested for the map view

Apple mapping and geocoding services

Apple

Used for
The base map, user-location display, airport mini-maps, and resolving an airport coordinate to a civil time zone
Receives
Map and geocoding requests handled by Apple under Apple’s own privacy policy

NOAA / NWS states that its standard web-server logs can include the date and time, originating IP address, browser or operating-system information, the object requested and request status, and that logs may be used for traffic measurement and security. See the NWS Privacy Policy and Apple Privacy Policy.

For Apple’s App Privacy label, PWB conservatively treats retained NOAA request logs as Precise Location (a location-centred radar tile area), Device ID (the network IP address) and Product Interaction (the airport, dataset or tile requested), linked through the IP address and used for app functionality and NOAA’s operational analytics. They are not used for tracking. This describes the provider’s request logs, not a PWB analytics SDK or user profile.

On-device processing

METAR and TAF decoding, crosswind and other calculations, PDF creation, and the app’s current briefing summaries are performed on your device. PWB does not send weather data, briefing content or prompts to an external AI service.

Generated PDF files are written to the app’s temporary storage. They leave the app only if you choose a destination in Apple’s share sheet. That destination then controls its copy.

Tracking

PWB does not track you across other companies’ apps or websites. It has no advertising identifier, ad network, analytics SDK or data-broker integration, and does not use Apple’s App Tracking Transparency framework. Standard service logs described above are not used by PWB for targeted advertising.

The support website

The website is hosted through Cloudflare. Cloudflare receives normal website-request information such as IP address, request headers and the page requested, and may use essential security measures to protect the site. The site does not include advertising or analytics scripts and does not intentionally set advertising or analytics cookies. See Cloudflare’s Privacy Policy.

If you submit the optional support form, your email address, message, optional name, IP address and ordinary browser/request metadata are processed by Formspree and forwarded to our support inbox so we can reply. We use this information only to handle your request, based on our legitimate interest in providing customer support. It is not used for marketing. See Formspree’s Privacy Policy.

Cloudflare, Formspree, Apple and NOAA services may process information outside the United Kingdom. Their privacy notices describe the safeguards and rights applying to their processing.

Retention and deletion

App data remains on your device until you delete it in the app, iOS clears a cache, or you remove the app. Current location is held in memory rather than saved by PWB. Temporary PDFs remain subject to iOS temporary-file management and any copy you choose to share is controlled by the selected destination.

Support correspondence is kept only as long as reasonably needed to reply, resolve the issue and retain necessary support records. You may ask us to delete your support message from our inbox and, where available to us, Formspree. NOAA, Apple, Cloudflare and Formspree control their own operational and security logs under their respective policies.

Your data rights

You can deny or revoke location access at any time in iOS Settings; the app remains usable through ICAO search. NOAA radar is off by default and can be turned off from the Map tab. You can remove locally saved favourites, groups and routes in the app, or remove all local app data by deleting the app.

Where UK data-protection law applies, you may ask us to access, correct or delete personal information we control, or to restrict or object to its processing. Use the contact form and include enough detail for us to identify the relevant support message. You may also raise a data-protection complaint and, if unresolved, contact the UK Information Commissioner’s Office.

Children

The app is suitable for all ages and has no accounts, advertising or user-generated public content. The support website is not directed at children. If you are under 13, please ask a parent or guardian before sending a support message. If we learn that a child’s personal information was submitted without appropriate involvement, we will delete it where reasonably possible.

Changes

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this URL with a new “last updated” date.
